Sparta High Students Complete Spring Tubeling Planting Along Wallkill River

Friday, May 20, 2016

Ken Scognamiglio’s Advanced Placement Biology students participated in two days of riparian reforestation work on Sparta Township property adjacent to Sparta High School. Despite the site’s wet and muddy floodplain conditions, the students were able to plant 1,088 tubelings throughout the course of two days along a tributary to the Wallkill River. The students enthusiastically asked questions to learn more about the purpose of the project and went to great lengths to ensure that they didn’t step on any of the newly planted saplings. The students are looking forward to returning to the site next week to help install tree protection that was provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service through a Partners Agreement with Sparta Township.
