Floodplain Reforestation Tree Tubes Recycled on “America Recycles Day”

Wednesday, November 15, 2023

The SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group is excited to be celebrating “America Recycles Day” by sending out its first shipment of tree tubes to be recycled. The tree tubes were installed around each tree that the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group planted along Sussex County rivers and streams. The tree tubes are designed to protect the young saplings from damage by the deer and voles until the tree is large enough to survive on its own. The tubes remain on the tree for approximately 5-7 years, at which point they can be removed and recycled. This November 15th, to celebrate “America Recycles Day,” the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group shipped out 9 pallets (1,489 lbs.) of tree tubes to TerraCycle to be recycled. TerraCycle is an internationally-renowned recycling company that specializes in hard-to-recycle materials. The Wallkill River Watershed Management Group is excited to be beginning this next phase of floodplain reforestation stewardship work where used tree tubes will be recycled into other beneficial products!
