Floating Treatment Wetlands Installed at Fairview Lake

Monday, September 11, 2023

The SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group worked with Fairview Lake YMCA staff, board members, and local homeowners to install 3 floating treatment wetlands in Fairview Lake. The islands were paid for by a grant from the NJ Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership and are designed to help keep Fairview Lake clean. Microbes can use the island as an attachment site to form colonies that will break down the nutrients that feed harmful algal bloom-causing cyanobacteria. The native plant roots will also grow through the islands over time and can help take up nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen from the lake water.
