SCMUA-WRWMG Partners with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for Restoration Project

Tuesday, July 25, 2023

The SCMUA-WRWMG recently partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife-Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge staff to complete a wetlands restoration project at the SCMUA’s wastewater treatment plant that was funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and the NJ Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership. In addition to the tree planting that was already completed at the site, 4 new shallow water habitat pools were built on the property. These pools will act like vernal pools and are designed to hold water only during a small portion of the year to benefit amphibian egg laying. By the end of the summer, 2 new artificial beaver dams, known as beaver dam analogues, will also be constructed to help saturate portions of the floodplain and re-establish wildlife habitat in the wetlands.
