Volunteers Plant Trees at Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge

Wednesday, April 24, 2024

Members of the Friends of the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge and students from Princeton, NJ recently worked with the staff at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge and the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group to plant trees along the mainstem of the Wallkill River along Route 565 on the border between Vernon and Wantage Townships. This planting event builds off of previous plantings that the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group has conducted at the refuge since 2019. The trees were funded by a grant from the Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation as well as by a donation from the Friends of the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge. The trees and shrubs planted will grow well in the saturated soils surrounding the river. Some of the species planted include: black willow, silver maple, smooth alder, river birch, buttonbush, swamp white oak, and pin oak.
