Merriam Avenue School Earth Keepers Help at Memory Park

Tuesday, May 29, 2018

Merriam Avenue School students in Donna Nilsen’s Earth Keepers Club recently participated in an outdoor educational field day organized by the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group. The students helped to mulch the rain garden that was installed in October 2017, protect shrubs from deer, plant magnolia trees, hang a blue bird box, and clean up litter around the park.

During the event, students also heard a presentation from Paige at the Sussex County Office of Mosquito Control. By picking up litter, the students were helping to remove potential mosquito breeding habitat since the litter can collect rainwater, providing mosquitoes a water source to lay their eggs.
