Halsted Middle School C2C Students Make Their Own Porous Pavers

Tuesday, November 05, 2019

The WRWMG’s Education Specialist worked alongside Newton Halsted Middle School students enrolled in the C2C (Choose 2 Connect) after school enrichment program to create porous pavers. Students were challenged to create a paver that would allow water to penetrate through it by using a combination cement, gravel, or sand. Students worked together to create pavers made up of different ratios of the ingredients. Once dry, the students will test their pavers based on their ability to allow water to penetrate. Groups that used only gravel and a small amount of cement to create their pavers will have the greatest level of water penetration because sand clogs the spaces between the rocks, preventing water from going between it.
