Pope John High School Plants Trees Along Paulins Kill

Wednesday, May 02, 2018

12th graders from Christine Dunbar’s environmental science class at Pope John Regional High School worked with the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group to plant and protect 262 trees and shrubs along the Paulins Kill. Additionally, as part of the day, students had a chance to examine live macroinvertebrate samples collected from the Paulins Kill River at Lafayette Park.

Students also learned about the importance of tree and shrub maintenance by walking through a previously planted site, ripping off any vines that have wrapped around the trees and pushing down tree shelters that heaved up from freezing and thawing in the winter. These maintenance activities will help prevent voles from entering the bottom of the tree tube and chewing the bark around the young saplings.
