Merriam Avenue Elementary Students Learn about Watershed Health

Tuesday, June 06, 2017

20 Merriam Avenue Elementary students in 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade recently worked alongside the SCMUA-WRWMG to plant native trees and shrubs in Newton’s Memory Park. The students also learned how people cause water pollution by littering, over fertilizing their lawns, and not picking up their pet’s waste. Students then brainstormed ways that they can reduce the amount of pollution they cause and encourage others to make small changes that can have a large collective impact for improving local water quality. Everyone left the park with a greater understanding about how they can protect local streams in their hometown and are excited to show their families the trees they planted.
